Geothermal is power extracted from heat stored within the earth. This geothermal energy originates from the original formation of the planet, from radioactive decay of minerals, and from solar energy absorbed at the surface. It has been used for space heating and bathing since ancient Roman times, but is now better known for generating electricity.
The geothermal system consists of a geothermal unit, the unit is installed in your home and attached to pipes buried beneath the ground. An ethanol solution is circulated throughout the pipes to help absorb heat from the ground. That heat is then extracted from the ethanol solution and pumped back into your house. During the summer months, the process is reversed. The unit extracts heat from the home and it is transferred into the earth, cooling your home.
Geothermal power is cost effective, reliable, and environmentally friendly.
Under the ecoENERGY Retrofit Program, a property owner can qualify for provincial grants by improving the energy efficiency of their home and reducing their home’s impact on the environment.
